Hayward Gallery- Move: Choreographing you

Move: Choreographing you is the main exhibition at the Hayward Gallery at the moment and is not your usual art exhibition. I went with my dad and a friend and it was not at all what I expected. As you enter you're met by a large room filled with what look like parts of an obstacle course! We went right at the start of the day which I think is the best time as it is least crowded.

There are two long wooden walls filled with a green light that you walk through as well as a big blow up onion with a black box on either side! As shown in the name, the exhibition is all about getting you to move. There are a series of rooms with different objects in, all interactive. One of my favourites is the rings which remind me of monkey bars slash those rings you hold on the tube! You have to try and make your way across them without touching the floor and believe me it is a LOT harder than it looks! I tried (and failed!) twice!

My dad's favourite was a room filled with screens all facing in different directions. A film was playing but you couldn't just watch one, the film was only on one or two at a time, sometimes all of them but a different part of the film, always changing. You had to move around constantly and keep looking around and this with the noises coming from all around you was quite disconcerting and created a brilliant effect.

There are many more parts of the exhibition which I haven't begun to explain including dancers, hula hooping, seeing yourself moving in a different time (I know, spooky!), lying on a piano in pitch black, a monkey costume, being in the dark with only footsteps and the trigger of a gun and so much more!

If you are interested in art or dance, are having a nice day out at the South Bank in London or you just like playgrounds then I'd say this is the exhibition for you! I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to people of all ages.

  2. Kate,

Sounds like you've inherited your dad's gift of gab and talent for writing. If that's what you want to pursue in life, then don't ever give up on it! While it isn't, necessarily, the most lucrative profession, it's definitely a personally rewarding one.

Good for you to try out the rings. I know I couldn't have made it through.
